Here in the south (virginia is south) They celebrate Robert E Lee day, schools, state, banks are closed. and then On Monday Its Martin Luther King day and everything is closed again.
I believe it started out as "Lee-Jackson" day, then became "Lee-Jackson-King" day, then finally just "MLK" day... Gotta love political correctness... NOT!!!
Not to stir up a hornet's nest, but the War Between The States might have been avoided, cost wise, if the north would have reimbursed the slave holders for the cost of purchase of the slaves.
BTW, the Emancipation Proclamation freed no slaves, either. Lincoln's Proclamation applied to those territories under control of the Confederacy, not the Union.
The Emancipation Proclamation placated the northern states, who were allowed to keep slaves, and were exempt from the Proclamation.
